AI app development

You need a product, not a demo. We build the one your business runs on.

We start from what your business actually needs and build the product that does it, for phones and for the browser. The model does the part it is genuinely good at, and everything around it is engineered rather than prompted.

  • You own the source and the hosting
  • Shipped, not demonstrated

What AI app development is

AI app development is the work of building a product from nothing, with a model doing one defined job inside it. The starting point is what your business needs the product to do rather than what a model happens to be good at. Custom AI application development ends with something your team actually uses on a Monday morning. You hold the source code, the hosting and a written handover that somebody can act on.

Where AI products go wrong

Almost none of these failures are technical. They get decided in the first fortnight, by the people choosing what the AI is actually for. The bill for that arrives later, when real users have the product in their hands.

  • 01

The AI was the pitch, not the product

A model in the demo raised the money and then had to do a job. Nothing underneath it was built to carry the weight, so the second month is where the product stops.

  • 02

It was built for a connection that always holds

Every screen was drawn on the assumption of a good network and a fast answer. Real users are on a train or in a lift, and the product has no behaviour for either.

  • 03

Nobody decided who runs it afterwards

The build finished on time, and the knowledge walked out with the people who wrote it. Six months later a model provider changes something and there is nobody in the building who can answer for it.

How we build them

  • 01

The model gets one job and it is written down

We name the single thing the model is responsible for before anybody opens an editor. Everything else in the product is ordinary software, which is the half that has to hold.

  • 02

The bad case is designed, not discovered

No signal, a slow answer and a wrong answer are three states we draw first. Your product carries on through all three of them, degraded in a way somebody designed rather than broken.

  • 03

Handover is a deliverable, not a phase

The keys and the runbook are written while the work is still happening, not after it. You finish able to hire somebody else entirely, which is the only version of ownership that means anything.

How the first three weeks run

  1. Week 1

01We work out what it has to do

Two days on the product itself, and on the one job the model is there to do. Sometimes the honest answer is that you do not need a build at all, and we say so.

  2. End of week 2

    02You get a costed plan

The plan names what gets built first, and prices it against what you told us in week one. You keep the document either way, and it is specific enough that somebody else could price it.

  3. From week 3

03It gets built in slices you can see

Work starts once you approve the plan, and something runs at the end of every slice. What you look at is the real product rather than a status report about one.

An AI feature against an AI product

Both ship something with a model in it. They differ on what happens in the first week that real people are using it in earnest.

The products we build

Three products, and the hard part of each one named rather than its feature list. Not one of them was a model with an interface bolted onto the front of it.

Consumer, four products in one

Everything behind one login, on 2G

A wallet and a marketplace shipped behind the same login as the chat, for a market on old networks. The hard part was that a single heavy screen anywhere in it undoes the tuning everywhere else.

Internal, a person in the loop

A platform that stops and waits

A content team of a hundred and fifty writers had every piece drafted and illustrated by the system. It runs the whole pipeline and then halts, one step short of publishing, waiting for a person.

Marketplace, a million users

A feed that never asks anybody to wait

A short video product with live rooms behind the same login, past a million users after release. That benchmark had already been set by companies running thousands of engineers against the same problem.

When a build is the wrong answer

This page argues for building new software, so it is worth naming the times when that is wrong. Two of the three answers below are a different service, and each label links to it.

There is a system underneath already
Then the layer between that system and a model is weeks of work rather than a build. Our AI software integration page is the one you want.
You are still proving the idea
Build the one slice that answers it and stop. Our custom AI MVP development page covers that, and it is a far smaller commitment.
The product is the business
Then it gets built properly, by people who will still answer the phone in a year. That is what this page is for.

What an AI product is built from

Nothing here is a requirement, and the choice follows your product rather than our habits. What matters more is that all of it is ordinary technology somebody else can pick up.

A Fantacy client on the build

Fantacy is our Amazon style retail product. He goes through what was built and how the work ran.

A second Joysale client on the same product

Another marketplace running on Joysale. Worth watching beside the first, since the two bought the same thing.

I have to be honest, sometimes it's hard to find a company or someone abroad to do your project. Not only might you waste your time and money, there is this thing called trust. In business you must trust the person you are dealing with.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need AI in this at all?

Often not, and part of what the first week is for is finding that out. A model earns its place where the input is messy language or an image, and a rule cannot cope. Where the job is a calculation with a right answer, ordinary code does it better and costs less to run.

Who owns the code and where does it run?

You own the source, and it runs in cloud accounts that are already in your name. The repositories and the model provider accounts are set up as yours in the first week rather than handed over at the end. Nothing in that arrangement depends on us staying the people who maintain the product afterwards.

What happens when the model gets something wrong?

It will, so the product is drawn around that rather than around the good case. Anything with money or a customer's data on the other side of it stops for a person. Everything the model does is logged, so a wrong answer can be found and undone.

What does AI powered app development actually include?

It covers the product design and the build for whichever platforms it has to run on. The model work sits inside that rather than beside it, and so does store submission where there is an app. The handover documentation is part of the price rather than an extra at the end.

Is custom AI application development affordable for a mid sized company?

It depends on what gets built first, which is why week two ends with a price rather than a range. Companies of twenty to a hundred people are most of who we build for, and the scoping reflects that. Some of them hire AI app developers from us for part of the work and run the rest in house.

We already have an app and want to add AI to it. Is this the page?

Probably not. A model added to software that already runs is a different job, and it is usually faster. The AI software integration page covers it, and it is worth reading before you commit to a build.
